The Key to Having the Best Summer is Finding the Right Shenanigans

By, Stephanie Blitzer and Hannah Greenwald, Madrichot at TY

When we were campers, our best memories of TY were when we would participate in fun and random activities that were created by both our madrichim and peers. For example, whenever it would rain, Hannah’s friends would organize a slip and slide through the puddles in camp. Whenever we would have themed meals, we would create elaborate and ridiculous costumes that would go with the meal’s theme (like in the picture). On the 4th of July we would always dress up in Red, White, and Blue. Our suitcases would always contain random items set aside for the purpose of these themed meals and spontaneous activities.

We cherished every moment at camp because of these unique and quirky happenings we started for each other, things like cloud watching during chofesh (free time), or making a swinging bench for people to use, or starting and continuing various camp traditions. Now that we are madrichot, we watch as our chanichim continue the fun traditions we and those before us started, and also create their own traditions. Hannah and I also try to continue the fun activities we once did as campers like wearing overalls on Fridays or playing with giant bubbles and kites. We hope that the traditions we have started will continue and we hope we have inspired our chanichim to make the most of all activities.

Here is the big bubbles recipe, so you can have a little piece of camp at home:

6 cups  water

1 cup light corn syrup

2 cups Joy dishwashing soap (If using an ultra concentrated dishwashing liquid, use only 1 1/3 cups)

  1. In a large bowl (at least 3 quarts) stir water and corn syrup until combined.
  2. Add dishwashing liquid and stir very gently until well mixed.
  3. (Try not to make any bubbles.) Dip (don't stir) bubble wands into bubble liquid and blow bubbles.
